Midjourney, an artificial intelligence (AI) service that creates images from natural language descriptions, has lately prohibited the creation of photos of Chinese President Xi Jinping, much to the chagrin of its customers. But the prohibition has not prevented its users frommidjourney-ai-users-find-workaround-amid-ban-on-chinese-presidents-images discovering a workaround by making deep fakes of Xi, which are digital representations that have been altered using powerful machine learning algorithms.

This week, Midjourney disabled access to its free trial edition to avoid the growth of deep fakes on its site. Although the site still permits the creation of photos depicting international leaders, the Chinese President is conspicuously absent. Any effort to create a picture including his likeness or simply to mention his name is banned on Midjournemidjourney-ai-users-find-workaround-amid-ban-on-chinese-presidents-imagesy.

A user of the text-to-image AI generator tweeted, “That is still doable with /imagine if you supply the whole URL of an existing picture of Xi in the prompt. Instead, you may use blend with two existing images.” Another user mentioned that there was the option of utilising MidJourney v5’s blend feature between two photos, but expressed concern that it might ultimately be policed.

Opponents, such as Sarah McLaughlin, senior scholar at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), have contended that the restriction undermines the core values of free speech and expression by becoming a kind of censorship.

David Holz, the founder and CEO of Midjourney, stated in messages exchanged on the chat website Discord last fall that the company had received complaints from local customers about “various issues in different nations,” forcing them to restrict several relevant phrases. According to chat records investigated by The Washington Post, Holz abstained from mentioning the forbidden phrases to avoid unwarranted controversy.

Holz noted in his Discord remarks that the restricted terms were not exclusive to China. He acknowledged, however, that China was a particularly delicate issue, since political comedy may put Chinese users in danger. Holz sought to explain the rationale of his actions by declaring, “Our choice was not driven by financial gain, and it is apparent that providing Chinese folks with access to this technology is for the greater good in this case.”
