Celestia has introduced Blobstream, a data availability solution tailored for the Arbitrum ecosystem.

Celestia has launched the data availability solution known as Blobstream, specifically for the Arbitrum ecosystem. The development of this technology will provide developers with the opportunity to create orbit chains, which are simply chains that can be customized.

Celestia Integration with Arbitrum Orbit Chains

Celestia’s goal is to act as an amplifier for data availability. Incorporating Blobstream into the Arbitrum ecosystem is a significant step forward, particularly for orbit chains.

This means that each of these networks can function either as a layer 2 chain, which settles transactions on Ethereum, or as a layer 3 chain, which settles on Arbitrum One, which is Arbitrum’s very own layer 2 platform.

Blobstream’s significance stems from its ability to facilitate data availability sampling (DAS), a crucial method that guarantees all network participants access to critical transaction and status change data consistently.

L2 and L3 rollups can now access the capabilities of Celestia light clients, thereby enhancing their operational efficiency. We are primarily incorporating the Blobstream functionality to streamline the development process for individuals within the Arbitrum ecosystem.

In the past, the launch of a new chain would require the formation of a data availability committee, a group responsible for maintaining and providing data on demand during the launch process.

The purpose of Blobstream is to make these issues more manageable by providing a more straightforward approach to the utilization of DAS, which thus eliminates the need for a data availability committee.

Both Celestia and Succinct Labs worked together to develop Blobstream. This was a collaborative project. The technology uses a zero-knowledge light client that Succinct Labs developed to send attestations of Celestia’s data root to Orbit smart contracts.

One of the benefits of this configuration is that it ensures an integrated operation between the two platforms, which in turn strengthens the overall functionality of Arbitrum’s orbit chains.

In addition to being a development that is particularly useful for the Ethereum community, the introduction of Blobstream is an upgrade to the Arbitrum network.

When Celestia and other technologies like Blobstream were unavailable, developers frequently had to contend with throughput constraints. As a result, they were forced to choose between different Layer 1 solutions or the more laborious work of establishing a data availability committee.
