Mira Murati Takes Over as ChatGPT CEO, Succeeding Sam Altman

ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI, unexpectedly declared the removal of billionaire Sam Altman from the board of directors and the appointment of Mira Murati as the organization’s new CEO.

Who Is Mira Murati?

Mira Murati, a Dartmouth-educated engineer of Albanian descent who has made significant contributions to developing several notable OpenAI products as Chief Technology Officer, will serve as the organization’s interim CEO.

Ms Murati has previous experience in aerospace, automotive, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR).

After this, Ms. Murati accepted a senior product manager position at Tesla, under the leadership of Elon Musk, where she made substantial contributions to the Model X’s development.

Furthermore, she has held a position at Leap Motion, a virtual reality (VR) company, where she oversaw the integration of artificial intelligence into real-world, practical applications.

In 2018, following this varied experience, Murati joined OpenAI.

Murati, who joined OpenAI in 2018, was instrumental in providing direction for creating ChatGPT and DALL-E.

A year ago, she was appointed to the position of chief technology officer (CTO).

On Friday, in a statement, the organization stated:

“Given her long tenure and close engagement with all aspects of the company, including her experience in AI governance and policy, the board believes she is uniquely qualified for the role and anticipates a seamless transition while it conducts a formal search for a permanent CEO.”

According to a memo she distributed to the staff and as reported by Bloomberg, Mira Murati described herself as “honored and humbled” to assume the leadership position at the organization following Sam Altman’s departure.

She further stated in her memo:

“We are now at a crucial juncture where our tools are being widely adopted, developers are actively building on our platforms, and policymakers are deliberating on the best ways to regulate these systems. This is welcome progress and an opportunity to participate in a future where AI is built and used for good.”

Rift Among OpenAI Board Members

The rift among OpenAI board members becomes more apparent as additional information becomes available.

Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI and close ally of Sam Altman, tendered his resignation shortly after Altman’s dismissal.

Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist and co-founder of the organization, was the one who announced Altman’s dismissal.
