NewLimit, a startup co-founded by Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong, has raised $40 million with the aim of extending people’s lives.

Blake Byers, a former Google Ventures partner with a Ph.D. in bioengineering from Stanford who co-founded this longevity pharma startup, announced the Series A funding on Tuesday from investors including Dimension, Founders Fund, Kleiner Perkins, Eric Schmidt, Elad Gil, Garry Tan, and Fred Ehrsam.

The company received $110 million from Byers and Armstrong in 2021. According to the two, this funding is committed over the life of the company, so it has yet to be wholly funded.

The most recent $40 million is a commitment from venture capitalists and will be accessed over time.

There is currently no discussion of valuation, the two added.

Greg Johnson, who previously led the development of novel machine learning methods at the Allen Institute for Cell Science, and Jacob Kimmel, who led a laboratory focused on epigenetic reprogramming as a Principal Investigator and Computational Fellow at research and development company Calico.

“Greg [Johnson] and Jacob [Kimmel] are really operating the business day to day,” Armstrong told TechCrunch, adding that he himself is “really just an investor and a board member.”

Byers and Armstrong have stated that the company is still in its infancy and that the founding team is performing well in its current iteration.

“Cure Aging” via Cellular Reprogramming

According to the most recent press release, NewLimit was founded to “cure aging” via “epigenetic reprogramming,” aiming to “figure out a way to restore the regenerative potential we all had when we were younger, but somehow lost.”

NewLimit desires to conduct research on the epigenetic drivers of aging, develop products that can regenerate tissues for the treatment of specific patient populations, and, if feasible, develop therapies that could slow, stop, or reverse the aging process.

Therefore, the company concentrates on developing therapies that reprogram cell age without altering cell type. In April, the company reported that it is developing screening technologies that will enable testing of reprogramming strategies for their ability to make old cells “look” youthful.

“The goal here is something quite different: extending human healthspan. Imagine if you could live the same number of years, but be free from pain, and have the same mobility and cognition as someone in their thirties,” the team said back in 2021.

The co-founders argued that new cells arriving from older hosts are not science fiction because it has occurred many times before. For instance, an old epidermis cell from an animal has been transformed into a newborn animal with an average life span of zero days.

“The idea is one day if we’re successful, you could make old people’s immune systems younger, and so more functional,” Byers told TechCrunch. “So in an ideal world here in the future, there’s a way for us, our bodies and our minds, to stay young,” Armstrong added.

While emphasizing on aging, the company argued that the same products could treat or prevent certain aging-related diseases, including fibrosis, infectious, and neurodegenerative diseases.
