Optimism Upgrade Enables ‘Bedrock’, Reduces Deposit Time

According to an announcement from network developer OP Labs, the Optimism network completed its “Bedrock” upgrade on June 7, reducing deposit latencies, lowering layer-1 fees, and implementing additional security features.

The developer states that the upgrade is part of a succession of reforms that will facilitate the creation of a “superchain” of scalable Web3 networks using Optimism’s OP Stack software.

According to OP Labs CEO Karl Floersch, Bedrock incorporates multiple gas optimizations discovered by the team, reducing Ethereum’s network data availability fees by 40%.

These savings are passed on to Optimism’s customers through reduced gas prices. In addition, the upgrade enables the network to perceive Ethereum chain reorganizations (reorgs) and reflect them in the user’s optimism balance.

This helps reduce deposit times to one minute. Previously, deposits from Ethereum to Optimism required an average of 10 minutes due to the need to acquire L1 finality.

Additionally, Bedrock employs a two-step withdrawal procedure to prevent bridge exploits. In addition to these immediate modifications, the new upgrade paves the way for future development of the OP Stack, with the end aim of constructing a multi-network “superchain,” loveaccording to Floersch.

It incorporates “modular proof systems” that enable developers to build and customize their blockchain networks And the validator component of the software, known as “op-geth,” has fewer than 1,000 lines of code that differ from Ethereum’s version, potentially making it simple for validators to switch. The Base network of Coinbase announced on February 23 that it would join the Superchain.

On May 24, it released a roadmap detailing its mainnet launch intentions.
