Ripple CTO Criticizes Uniswap’s Decentralization Claims

David Schwartz, chief technology officer at Ripple, has taken to Twitter to discuss which crypto initiatives in the industry are decentralized and which are not. In particular, he commented on the well-known decentralized exchange (DEX), Uniswap.

Schwartz responded to a tweet posted by @LefterisJP, the creator of @rotkiapp. According to the latter, some crypto initiatives “opensource wash” their work to appear decentralized and open source.

The tweet expressly referred to Uniswap v4, distributed under a Business Software License (BSL). The latter ensures that software can become open source after a specified amount of time has passed since its release.

Due to this, @LefterisJP stated that Uniswap v4 is not open source. David Schwartz remarked that Uniswap, the initial iteration of the DEX, is also not decentralized.

The CTO of Ripple shared a link to a previous tweet in which he questioned whether Uniswap v3 is a decentralized project.

Now, he criticized Uniswap v4. His justification for this position was that “it is not decentralized if someone or some group has the legal right to tell others how they can and cannot use it.”

Schwartz also stated that Uniswap Labs manages Uniswap.

The prominent XRP-themed Twitter account @XRPcryptowolf confirmed that Ripple is centralized, thwarting the efforts of numerous XRP enthusiasts to assert otherwise.

According to him, decentralization is “the biggest lie in crypto,” and there is no genuinely decentralized project. “At least Ripple is honest about being centralized,” he tweeted.

One of the commentators disagreed, stating that only Bitcoin is decentralized in his opinion.
