Satya Nadella Backs Sam Altman Return to OpenAI Over Microsoft

Following the announcement of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman’s appointments to Microsoft’s AI research team the day before, Satya Nadella indicated his approval of Altman’s return to OpenAI.

Microsoft’s CEO on the Next Step for Sam Altman

Regardless of whether Altman decides to rejoin Microsoft or return to OpenAI, as some investors have attempted to facilitate, he will collaborate with Microsoft, Nadella told Bloomberg Television in an interview.

Despite Altman’s recent removal as CEO of OpenAI, Microsoft maintains a connection with him as the principal backer of the organization.

“Irrespective of where Sam is, he’s working with Microsoft”, stated Nadella.

Nadella unveiled on Sunday, contrary to what had been speculated about OpenAI, that he is appointing Altman as the head of a new artificial intelligence division at Microsoft.

The sudden termination of Altman from OpenAI on Friday caused significant upheaval in Silicon Valley, prompting investors in the startup to urge for his reinstatement.

In a short space of time, the majority of OpenAI’s workforce conveyed their desire to resign and transition to Altman’s position at Microsoft, barring any action from the current board.

Absence of Error by Altman

Nadella reiterated that he was not told of any wrongdoing by Altman during his time at OpenAI.

He continued, “I remain confident in Sam and his leadership and capability, and that’s why we want to welcome him to Microsoft.”

The CEO of Microsoft also stated,  “Surprises are bad, and we just want to make sure things are done in a way that will allow us to partner well.”

Nadella declared that he has not been updated on the grounds for Altman’s dismissal, stating, “I’ve not been told about anything. The board has not discussed anything that Sam did other than some breakdown in communications”.

Furthermore, he stated that significant changes occurring without Microsoft’s involvement “is not good, and we will definitely ensure that some of the changes that are needed, happen.”

Sam Altman, commenting on yesterday’s developments, wrote: “Satya and my top priority remain to ensure OpenAI continues to thrive we are committed to fully providing continuity of operations to our partners and customers. The OpenAI/Microsoft partnership also makes this very doable”.
