The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a UN refugee agency, has accepted its first-ever crypto donations for humanitarian help to Ukrainians fleeing the country’s turmoil.
Since the war began, Ukraine has received over $100 million in cryptocurrency donations, which have proven crucial to the country and its people.
Binance Charity donated $2.5 million in Binance USD (BUSD) stablecoins to UNHCR, which will be used to rehabilitate and support refugees fleeing Ukraine to neighboring countries.
More than 10 million people have been displaced from their homes in Ukraine, according to a UNHCR report, and the agency will use crypto stablecoin charity funds to provide legal and social assistance.
According to Marie Grey, Executive Director and CEO of UNHCR in the United States, the bitcoin donation will be critical in the organization’s efforts to assist as many families as possible. Grey also praised the entire crypto community for assisting Ukrainians through this difficult period, saying:
“This generous support will make a life-changing difference for families forced to flee, and more importantly, it shows families that a caring and committed global community is stepping forward to help during their darkest times.”
A humanitarian crisis has erupted in the region as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Since the war began, cryptocurrencies have proven to be one of the most important sources of relief for the beleaguered country, with over $100 million in documented crypto donations.
