Web3 developer Brian Guan lost $40,000 after accidentally exposing his wallet keys on GitHub.
A Web3 developer revealed the unfortunate experience of losing funds as a result of inadvertently disclosing his wallet keys to the public on the developer platform GitHub.
Brian Guan, co-founder of the Web3 streaming app Unlonely, shared a post on X on June 5 in which he claimed that he had lost $40,000 as a result of making a repository on GitHub public. The developer stated that he had forgotten that his private keys were stored in the repository.
When a community member inquired about the duration of the fund depletion, the Web3 founder responded that it took only two minutes for an individual to withdraw the funds.
The crypto community’s responses to Guan’s ubiquitous post on X were varied. Some members expressed sympathy for the developer and offered support, while others uncovered Guan’s previous comments regarding developers utilizing OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to write code.
A member of the community shared the experience and expressed their regret, with the hope that Guan would recover. Nevertheless, other members of the community were less benevolent.
Guan expressed his perspective on smart contract engineers in 2023. Guan identifies initiatives that compensate smart contract engineers with $200,000 as “ngmi,” which is a contraction for “not gonna make it.” According to the founder of Web3, any competent developer “should be capable of composing solidity with the assistance of ChatGPT.”
As a result, community member Foorbar published a parody of Guan’s previous post, asserting that individuals who invest $200 in a hardware wallet are unlikely to succeed. He also suggested that developers should be able to store private keys in their GitHub with the assistance of ChatGPT.
In the interim, an additional user expressed regret for the incident, but he believed that Guan’s perspectives on developers were indicative of “Gen Z entitlement.”
Although the use of ChatGPT to code may still be controversial to some, a memecoin that was coded using the artificial intelligence chatbot has already achieved success in the crypto space. The market capitalization of Turbo, a memecoin, surpassed $600 million on May 28, as its prices reached a new all-time high.
In April 2023, the memecoin was developed by digital artist Rhett Mankind using ChatGPT. Mankind employed prompts to direct ChatGPT in the development of what he referred to as “the next great” memecoin.
