Meta’s Instagram Launches Twitter-Like App

Instagram’s parent company, Meta, reportedly revealed its intention to launch a text-based conversation app in a private meeting with select creators.

The user interface depicted in the leaked screenshots of the rumored upcoming app resembles that of Twitter.

Lia Haberman, an influencer marketing and social media marketing instructor at the University of California, Los Angeles Extension, uncovered Instagram’s plan to compete with Twitter.

According to Haberman, despite being built on top of Instagram, the text-based app is decentralized and will function as a separate app.

Additionally, the application will be compatible with other decentralized social media applications, such as Mastodon, enabling users to reach larger audiences.

The upcoming app will maintain a centralized feed similar to Twitter, allowing users to view text, images, and videos shared by followers and suggested accounts.

Each text-based post will be limited to 500 characters in length.

While the Twitter-competitive app will operate independently from Instagram, creator controls and account safety features, such as blocked accounts and keywords, will be carried over.

Sarah Frier, a reporter for Bloomberg, reportedly confirmed with insiders that Instagram is developing a Twitter-like app.

Meta initially confirmed plans to develop a standalone decentralized social network in March, when it stated, “We are investigating a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates.

We believe there is a need for a space where creators and public figures can post timely updates about their interests.”

TBD, a division of Jack Dorsey’s fintech company Block, announced a Web5 decentralized web platform that aims to introduce “decentralized identity and data storage” to applications to further decentralize the internet.

To facilitate this decentralized web experience, TBD’s web5 platform will employ decentralized identifiers and introduce several key components.
