New York's Met Museum Returns $550K FTX Donations

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has consented to return $550,000 in donations it received from FTX prior to the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange in November, according to court documents filed on Friday.

The payments made by FTX’s U.S. subsidiary West Realm Shires Services in March and May of the previous year will be returned in full without additional legal proceedings.

FTX stated in its filing that “The Met wishes to return the Donations to the FTX Debtors, and the FTX Debtors and the Met have engaged in good faith, arm’s-length negotiations concerning the return.” The donations will be reimbursed within one month of receiving judicial approval.

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of FTX, was a proponent of effective altruism and used funds raised by the exchange to support various worthy causes. However, now that the company is under new management, efforts are being made to recover the donations made by FTX to repay creditors, which could include substantial political donations.
