OpenAI reversed its decision to let go just two days after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella appointed former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to oversee a new advanced AI research team.
OpenAI announced a new agreement on November 22 that would result in Altman’s reinstatement as the organization’s CEO. The organization formally affirmed this action via an official tweet.
OpenAI and Altman, as stated, “are working together to determine the specifics.” In support of his intention to become a member of OpenAI, Sam Altman retweeted the enrollment announcement, accompanied by the heart emoji.
In addition, Altman expressed his “love” for OpenAI openly as he decided to resign from his new position at Microsoft, adding:
“I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI, and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.”
Nadella supported Altman and President Greg Brockman’s decision to return to OpenAI, emphasizing how crucial it is for the organization’s continued success and mission expansion.
The brief separation of Altman from OpenAI brought to light his contribution to the team’s cohesion.
Reportedly, on November 20, 505 out of 700 OpenAI employees signed a letter claiming that the board’s dismissal of Altman undermined the company’s mission.
The letter stated, “The procedure by which you dismissed Sam Altman and Greg Brockman from the board has compromised the entirety of this endeavor and weakened our organization and mission.”
In conjunction with the timely employment offer from Microsoft and the backlash from OpenAI employees, Altman’s hegemony was solidified throughout the AI ecosystem.
