ChatGPT Plus Registrations Paused Due to Overwhelming Demand

OpenAI, the developer of the widely used artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, has suspended new registrations for ChatGPT Plus, the premium edition of the AI tool, in response to the significant increase in utilization following DevDay.

The announcement was published on X (previously Twitter) on Wednesday, November 15, by Sam Altman, the chief executive officer of the organization.

Altman asserts that the suspension of new registrations is due to the platform surpassing its capacity, which adversely affects the quality of the experience for users.

Atman reported that utilization of ChatGPT Plus has increased significantly since OpenAI’s DevDay, where the company introduced new application programming interfaces (APIs) approximately one week ago.

While new registrations are temporarily suspended, users can still opt into the app to be notified when subscriptions reopen, according to the CEO.

Following a week in which OpenAI services—including ChatGPT and its API—experienced a succession of outages due to distributed denial-of-service attacks and high demand, the decision has been made to suspend new ChatGPT registrations.

Developers constructing generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) and utilizing the API should experience fewer complications (such as an inability to save GPT drafts) as a result of the delay.

Although this may result in a transient decline in the number of new GPT users, access to them is restricted to Plus subscribers only.

Companies and developers have constructed GPTs for a variety of purposes since their inception, including graphic design on Canva.

Already-subscribed search marketers to ChatGPT Plus may utilize GPTs for content evaluation and SEO education. With more than 180 million users, ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI chatbots, according to data from SimilarWeb cited by Reuters.

However, increasing competition from Bard from Google and Claude 2 from Anthropic is present. Elon Musk declared on November 5 that he had developed an artificial intelligence messaging program called “Grok.”

OpenAI has recently broadened its horizons through a collaboration with the startup Humane to introduce Ai Pin, a wearable AI virtual assistant in the form of a physical AI device.
