Metamask, a popular Ethereum-based cryptocurrency wallet, has introduced default security alerts for users across various blockchains.

MetaMask, a well-known Ethereum-based self-custody cryptocurrency wallet, has announced that it will provide default security alerts for users of various blockchains, including Linea, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Avalanche, through its web extension and mobile app.

Coincident with the wallet’s meteoric rise in user base, which is expected to peak in 2022, new security features have been added. Between September 2023 and January 2024, the number of monthly active users increased from 19 million to 30 million. The rapid expansion of its user base was fueled by its strategic alliances with well-known trading platforms like Robinho.

On January 29, 2024, the security alert feature was initially added to the Ethereum mainnet using an extension. When consumers engage with known threats during transactions, security warnings notify them. This function mimics the requested transaction, looks for suspicious patterns, and alerts users if they are about to lose money.

In contrast to the majority of Web3 wallets, MetaMask asserts that its security warnings prioritize user privacy by not requiring users to share their transaction data with a third party for validation.

At its inception in April 2023, the security alert system was an experimental opt-in OpenSea alert that contributed to the protection of assets valued at $500 million. The company decided to include the MetaMask wallet to the security warnings after they were so successful with the other ones.

Many users who had the feature enabled earlier were able to avoid the notorious phishing scam in September 2023 when Vitalik’s X handle was hacked. MetaMask claimed that Blockaid’s systems detected the malicious DApp 24 hours before the hack and helped users save $100,000 worth of assets. The feature was developed in association with Blockaid, its security partner. When Uniswap founder Hayden Adam had his Twitter account compromised later in October, the alert system also went off.

“We would also add it to our public phishing list and help protect others,” Barbara Schorchit, senior product manager at MetaMask, adding that the company has noticed a small increase in customer support tickets from customers expressing gratitude for the tool and reporting the dangerous website they were on.

According to Schorchit, consumers were able to save more than $1 million during the December issue with the Ledger Connect Kit thanks to the alert feature:

“Nearly 100 front-end DApps were compromised, yet every MetaMask user who opted into the security alerts powered by Blockaid were protected, preventing what we estimate to be ~$1.15M worth of assets from being stolen”

Not only does MetaMask provide security alerts that prioritize user privacy, but the company is also actively trying to educate the public about scammers so that they can avoid falling for them. It is a platform for learning simulations that offers a comprehensive way to comprehend the intricacies of different types of scams.
